Eccotemp Tankless Water Heater Reviews

All said and done, what’s the best model from Eccotemp that gives you more bang for your buck?

While individual needs vary, we have considered a few key variables like capacity, flow rate, efficiency and user-friendliness to narrow down on these three heaters which we believe to be the best from Eccotemp.

1. Eccotemp EL22i

Eccotemp Systems EL22i Indoor Natural Gas 6.8 GPM Tankless Water Heater with Horizontal Vent Kit, Black

The EL22-I is the successor to the extremely popular EL22 indoor water heater from Eccotemp.

While it might look identical to its predecessor at first glance, with the all-black svelte glass casing and the large digital temperature display, it has a bunch of new features under the hood that improve its performance and efficiency.

For starters, this is a fully-automatic water heater.

In other words, it regulates the heating temperature automatically depending on the temperature of the water from the source. This helps reduce heating costs.

Also, it has an excellent flow rate of 6.8 gallons per minute (GPM) and is rated at 140,000 BTU per hour, which is perfect for a standard sized home with one or two bathrooms.

The compact size and the aesthetic design are a far cry from the old water heaters which were eyesores at best.
The black tempered glass looks stunning and it has a touchscreen control panel which makes it a treat to use. No need to invest in a vanity counter to hide this from public view.

This CSA certified heater also comes with an integrated anti-freeze circuit that ensures that any remaining water in the plumbing doesn’t freeze if the temperature drops.

The EL22-I can be powered by natural gas and liquid propane and it is split system adaptable. If you have curious toddlers at home, activate the child lock to instantly lock the touchscreen control panel.

You will need to buy a separate 4” venting for the power circuit though.

Pros

  • Compact water heater for indoor use
  • Stunning design with a black tempered glass casing
  • Touchscreen control panel
  • Digital temperature display
  • Rated at 6.8 gallons per minute
  • 140,000 BTU per hour
  • Integrated anti-freeze circuit
  • Can be powered by both natural gas as well as liquid propane
  • Child lock
  • Automatic temperature control
  • 5-year warranty on the parts and 10 years on the heat exchanger

Cons

  • Have to purchase the 4” venting separately

2. Eccotemp N45HI

The N45HI is the largest indoor water heater in Eccotemp’s range.

Unlike the fancy EL22-I, it has a more barebones design with a white, exterior casing and a bunch of push buttons on the control panel. But don’t let the unassuming appearance fool you.

This is a brute of a water heater that can cater to a normal-sized home with up to two bathrooms.

Rated at 140,000 BTU, it heats water and it heats it fast. This coupled with the 6.8 GPM flow rate translates into an endless supply of consistently hot water on demand.

Struggled with random temperature fluctuations with your old water heater? The N45HI boasts of quality heat transfer elements which ensure that the temperature remains consistent and an infallible electronic ignition system that never fails to deliver.

By the way, it is an automatic temperature control system which ranges from 90° – 140°F. So, there’s no way to manually adjust the temperature, which is a minor letdown.

It also borrows the anti-freeze circuit from the EL22-I but doesn’t have the child lock feature. So, if you have young children at home, you might want to consider an under the sink installation or install it in a vanity counter.

The installation itself is extremely easy thanks to the detailed instructions, minimal parts and the compact size of the heater. (Ensure that you have the right fittings for your plumb beforehand.)

The N45HI has an energy factor (EF) rating of 0:80 which is excellent, with an extremely high recovery rate of 82% and zero standby loss.

That translates into reduced annual operating costs.

Comes with the best-in-class 10-year warranty on the heat exchanger and a 5-year warranty on the parts.

Pros

  • Compact water heater for indoor use
  • Automatic temperature control (90° – 140°F)
  • Anti-freeze circuit
  • EF rating of 0:80
  • 82% Recovery rate
  • Can save almost 40% on your gas bills
  • 10-year warranty on heat exchanger and 5-year warranty on the parts
  • 140,000 BTU
  • 6.8 GPM flow rate
  • Manual, push-button control panel

Cons

  • No child lock feature

3. Eccotemp L10

The L10 is the smallest of Eccotemp’s tankless water heaters for outdoor use. But like most other models from the brand, the small size comes coupled with top-notch performance.

And has a gaggle of useful features to boot that is comparable to much higher priced units.

The white external casing is reminiscent of the N45HI. But this one has two knobs instead of push buttons. One to regulate the inflow of gas and the other to control the temperature. Oh yes, you can manually adjust the temperature from 80°-140°F. Simple but effective. If only, this had a digital temperature display!

The L10 can be installed outside and used off-grid since it comes with a battery igniter and a CSA regulator for attaching it to any 20 lbs. grill propane tank. You can also hard wire it to an LPG tank for a more permanent setup.

Plumbing is as easy as they come thanks to the standard-sized ½” NPT fittings.

The flow rate is 2.65 GPM which isn’t the best. But it will more than suffice for a small cabin or an RV with one bathroom and a couple of sinks.

There will be minimal fluctuations in temperature even if all outlets are open at the same time.

By the way, like most other models from Eccotemp, the L10 can run for up to 18 hours on a standard 20 lbs. propane tank. That’s as energy efficient as they come.

The L10 can also be rigged to a garden hose attachment for a power wash with steaming hot water and you can also attach it to a modified water system that’s powered by a 12-volt pump, for example.

Overall, the L10 is a very versatile outdoor tankless water heater that will be a cost-efficient replacement for your tanked unit.

Pros

  • Compact water heater for outdoor installations
  • Manual temperature control from 80°-140°F.
  • Perfect for off-grid installations
  • Comes with a battery igniter
  • CSA regulator for attaching to a 20 lbs. propane tank
  • ½” NPT fittings for easy plumbing
  • Can run for up to 18 hours on a standard 20 lbs. propane tank
  • Can be attached to a garden hose attachment

Cons

  • Poor flow rate as compared to indoor models
  • No digital temperature display
  • No Anti-freeze circuit. So you will have to ensure that you drain it if you plan to go for a holiday or if it won’t be in use for a long time period
